Help Aperture has disappeared #1

Hi Folks

I decide dft. have a play with the new photos app. God I wish I hadn’t. Aperture has now disappeared. A horrible no entry sign has replaced the Aperture Logo.

I went into time machine to go back a day or two, Aperture is also “greyed” out. How do I access my libraries? I have vaults and backups but I can’t access Aperture at all.

have you tried to download it from the App Store? For me, I can still access it from the purchased section.

Hi Adrian

I do get a message to download the latest version of Aperture from the App Store. However the message says it’s not available in the UK store.

OK, that sounds bad. Is the actual Apperture App still inside the Applications folder on your Mac? Maybe just the link in the Dock broke. What happens, when you double click an Aperture library?

Hi
App still in applications folder. Icon greyed out though.

Open library > message says can’t open with current version of Aperture. Upgrade software via App Store > this app is unavailable through UK AppStore

Paul,

that  sounds horrible! I’m sorry, but I have no idea what went wrong or how to fix it. May be a case for Apple support… I hope you find a way. At least the Libraries and vaults and thus your photos are most likely intact.

Have you tried holding down the COMMAND and OPTION keys while clicking on the Aperture app icon to open the app?  If that works, it opens a dialogue box where there are repair options. I’d try all three repair options if you can access them.

Aperture is still on your computer - but that version may not run after the OSX update. In my case - I had to open the Mac App Store (icon on your dock) and then click the tab at the top labeled Purchased. There in the list was Aperture with a link to Update the app. You will not find Aperture in the for sale section of the Mac App Store - only in the list of software you have already purchased.

Clicking on the link provided in the dialog box after trying to open Aperture did not work for me - I had to go find the update in the purchased section by myself.

Good Luck!

Hi Phillip, thank you for responding.

I have tried this option, but after selecting aperture in the purchased section of App store and then clicking on Aperture > Open nothing happens.

I have also gone back in time machine and did a restore from earlier in the month pre latest update. The Aperture icon is still greyed out with a no entry sign over it.

I think I’l have to try another program and attempt to import the backed up libraries into whatever I choose, perhaps Capture One.

So sorry to hear that Paul. You may want to go to this Apple’s discussions forum and ask the question there.

https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/photos_osx

I think I have read that some people needed to delete their current version of Aperture and then re-download it from the purchased section to get the right version on their computer. PLEASE do not do this on my say so! First ask you questions on the forum linked above.

Good Luck!
Phil.

Can I import the app from my laptop onto my desktop without having to copy everything else over?

First, I want to make sure, I understand what your plan is: You have a Mac laptop, on which you use Aperture. You also have a Mac desktop without Aperture. You want to try to open your Aperture library on your Mac desktop to recover your photos.

I don’t see why this would not work. You can install the latest version of Aperture (3.6) on your desktop from the “purchased” section of the Mac App Store. You can copy your Aperture library from your laptop to your desktop (using an external hard drive, for example). You can the open the Aperture library on your desktop using the freshly installed version of Aperture.

I would try something else first, though: The idea is to remove the non-working copy of the Aperture app (the one with the no-entry sign) from your system and install a fresh copy of Aperture. Then to try and open the Aperure library. I just tried this method on my girlfriend’s MacBook Pro, and it worked. Granted, her version of Aperture was working, so I don’t know if it would help in your situation. Seems worth a try, though.

1. Move the Aperture app (the one with the no-entry sign) off of your system: I used a USB key. Eject the USB key. May restart your system for good measure.

2. Do not touch the Aperture library.

3. Re-install Aperture from the “purchased” section in the Mac App Store.

4. Try to open the Aperture library.

Hi Paul,

I had exactly the same issue as you this week and resolved it just now. The solution that worked for me was (after trying all the above, and then some) to delet aperture and then go to the App Store, where in the purchases section the button had changed from “update” to “install”. It installed aperture v3.6 (which is what is needed to run aperture on Yosemite OS). It now works as it always has.

I can can not explain why this worked - or why the “update” doesn’t - but it did.  I did not have to unwind or change anything else.

Good luck.

Hi Mark

Thanks for this. Scary to delete it, but it appears the only option so far.

Hi Mark,

while I was trying this method, you confirmed that it works. That’s great! Hope, that it helps Paul.

Understand Paul. The way I went about it was to move it from the application folder to the trash can and leave it there (ie I did not empty trash). That way if any problems I could have moved it back. Once I reinstalled and it was all back up and running I perminatly deleted the old version from trash. My thinking to all this was - it was not working anyway so could not have gotten into a worse position :)

Good process here - I am reading others on Apple’s discussion forums doing exactly the same and getting good results. This seems like the fix!

Hi everyone

Thank you all for your contributions. I have Aperture back!!! whoop whoop.

I did as Mark & Phillip suggested and put the app into trash then re installed it through the App Store > Purchases. The only thing now is it is quite slow loading. Is it ok to delete the Aperture that sits in the trash or not? My thought was that having to versions installed maybe causing a conflict, hence the slow action of Aperture 3.

Thanks again guys.

Paul.

Great stuff Paul!!

Once aperture had loaded and I opened my first library to make sure all was ok I then deleted the old version from the trash. Did not experience any performance hit.

Good news Paul! I agree with Mark - be sure your Aperture library opens and then delete the older version of Aperture that is in your trash.

If you are also uploading your photos to the iCloud Photo Library - than can cause a loss performance.

Thanks to the guys who contributed to this thread, I was able to get Aperture back, but a bit late.  Apple convinced me Aperture wasn’t going to work on 10.10.3 and as such, talked me into moving the pictures and videos over to Photos.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get the pictures back into Aperture?

Thank you!

I Updated to Yosemite knowing Aperture 3.6 could be downloaded, only to find out the greyed out icon for Aperture, clicking on the icon told me to down load the update with a disconcerting message that it was not available from my country the UK.

Solution.

Drag Aperture from the applications folder to the trash DO not empty the trash!

Open up the purchased items from your app store account, click on Aperture and the 3.6 download will start and install.

Aperture will once again work, much to my delight and yours I’m sure.
