Did Photos ruin my chance to move? #1

I’m trying to import my Aperture library to Lightroom but Lightroom tells me I’ll have problems because it’s an old version? It’s not old. Everything I have is up to date. I tried Photos and hate it. But now it feels like I’m stuck?????

How do I reverse all this and move from Photos to Lightroom?

Which importer tool were you using?  Lr’s Aperture Importer? Are your photos managed or referenced?  How large is your Library or do you have several Libraries? If you move all of your photos into a single referenced folder, you should in the least be able to import them directly into Lr by selecting the folder and using Lr’s IMPORT process (not the Aperture Importer), then choosing ADD.  At least that way Lr will recognize them.  Of course, all of your adjustments, metadata, star ratings, won’t be recognized.  If you have a large library, some people had success with splitting them up into smaller libraries and importing them piecemeal.  I guess we need more info to see if we can specifically give you some help.

Thanks.

I have a single library on my laptop and a single on my iMac. The iMac is large, over 400gb. The laptop not large. Both were sharing streamed iCloud photos. Both were used to download photos from camera. Some of my photos were referenced from files brought over from old computers.

So I guess it was mixed? Reference and managed? And using the LR importer. But it won’t let me add and doesn’t activate the add button.

I didn’t use the Lr Importer but bought Aperture Exporter (~$12) instead and used it to move my photos.  90% of my photos were referenced with only my 2014 photos being managed.  With AE they were copied and I moved them all into a single new folder and then that folder was “imported” into Lr.  Now all of my 2015 photos go into that one new folder.  That did create a duplicate of my photos but they are now all on a large mirrored external HD and I could easily delete my original referenced folder if I ever need the space.  However, that does not help you with Adobe Lr’s importer.  Hopefully someone who has used Lr importer could chime in.  If not try calling Adobe support??  Good luck.

So are you working from an external hard drive? I’m about to move all my photos to a thunderbolt hard drive. If I can decide which program to use :) If I decide to have LR as my photo manager, I’ll buy the exporter and try that.

I have a LaCie Big2 external HD (thunderbolt) with 2 3GB mirrored RAID drives.  All of my photos are now on this drive.  I have a MBP laptop as my computer so when I travel I take two 1GB Western HDs (~$60 each) and keep them in separate bags in case one bag gets stolen.  I am now using Lr for DAM & the vast majority of post-processing.  When I travel with my laptop and portable HDs, and I’m gone for an extended amount of time, I will create a “travel catalog” in Lr on my laptop. Upon importing, I will import the photos to one portable HD and make a second backup copy to the second. When I get home, I move my photos to the laCie HD and merge the travel catalog into my main and only Lr catalog. I must admit, I got hyper about multiple back up systems for my photos mainly from following this site and Joseph’s advice.

Looks like my issue was space. I selected an external hard drive and the aperture importer in Lightroom worked great. Managed and referenced files mixed, it had no issues.

Now I have to find all the video that Aperture didn’t didn’t grab from Photos.

It looks like Aperture was able to access everything from the cloud except video?
