Major Aperture improvement from the outside… #1

I migrated out of Aperture but maybe I shouldn't have panicked. A good friend is using it, and very efficiently right now. The new PacPhun apps come with plug-ins for Aperture (along with Photoshop, etc) that add almost anything aperture lacks. That and the always fantastic file handling and creation of an attached second file when using a plug-in, etc. really works. She's delaying her migration indefinitely at present, waiting to see what the Fall's system update has in store for her. Her patience is paying off for now.

Glad to hear it.

I think a lot of people have given up too easily on Aperture.

Photos is basically insulting from Apple who are now a mobile phone company.

i would like to see move to purchase Aperture from Apple who clearly have no use for it

and are just concentrating on iPhone 7 or 8 or 9.

I, too, have remained with Aperture. I have always used plug-ins to fill in gaps. Currently my favorites are Macphun’s Intensity and Noiseless from the Creative Kit (CK). I have Aurora, too, but find Photomatix Pro plug-in much better for HDR. I use BorderFX to output images with copyright on them.

I do have Photoshop CS6 for when I do sports posters and need masks and layers.

Still, am going to test out Lightroom 6 soon. It will really, really have to impress me to switch.

I, too, wish MacPhun would buy Aperture from Apple. I think it would be a match made in heaven. I doubt it would come cheap (though it should since Apple doesn’t want it anymore).

1. Yes, still using Aperture; Aperture + plugins is/was perfect for my photography level. Now watching Joseph’s videos on Lightroom for Aperture users since (unless someone else takes it over) I’ll have to switch eventually.

2. I paid ~$270 for my first version of it, DVD plus instructional books, and was ecstatic! the metadata, List View, renaming on import, batching… When they lowered the price to $75 a few years ago that worried me; how would they keep it profitable?

3. So far it’s still working fine, except thumbnails in List View show upside down.

I posted this link under MacPhun but just checked and the offer is still up – free Tonality CK – and it includes the plugin for Aperture (among others – I use it in Photoshop). The link was in MacLife magazine. The new issue is out though, so it shouldn't be up for long: https://macphun.com/tonality-maclife

I'm still use Aperture too. When it comes to rastor editor, i feel like rastor based illustration and photo editing is moving to iOS with a lot of moment but still feel rastor based designing is still much more compelling on a desktop os.

With that said, If Photos for iOS gets proper support for raw, brushable, stacks and metadata editing, then i will move over to Photos. Of course, it may never happen if Apple decides that is not right direction for doing photography on iOS.

After over a year TRYING to use Photos (it’s getting better), it’s driving me nuts.  I’ve tried all the other options out there but I’m returning to Aperture 3.6 for now.  Just downloaded it again.  I really did try to give Photos a go, but it’s too limiting.  Not so much in editing, but more just the DAM, saving to two locations at import and other BASIC items like that.  When it stops working, maybe with 10.12, then I’ll cross the bridge.

Did you include Capture One in your cadre of applications you tested? Capture One Pro 9 is phenomenal, can import your Aperture libraries, and gives you the ability to customize the interface to practically look just like Aperture. Exporting works differently, but in my opinion offers greater capability as a result.

I was an Aperture user for 3-4 years, having moved there from Lightroom. I am now fully immersed in Capture One and loving it.

I just detected and downloaded the NIK filters, now owned by Google! And therfore available for free! NIK Filters get installed as plug-ins in Aperture and Adobe apps. But are also available as stand-alon app.

Up to now i’m pretty happy with aperture and thanks to the fact that its supported by OS Sierra i will keep it another year or two.

PETER - Where did you find the NIK filters? Aperture still works for me (10.10.5), and unless Luminar gets a CMS, sticking with it. Would appreciate the NIK filters though…thanx
