ON1 has released it's long-awaited RAW processor, ON1 Photo RAW. In this “first look” video, we approach it with fresh eyes—but is it ready for prime time?

In this session, I explore ON1 Photo RAW completely fresh. It's new to me, so that you can experience a first-time use along with me. I do some comparisons to Lightroom's RAW processing, and take a pretty critical look at what it can and can't do. I've been criticized already for not coming into this more prepared, but that's the point of these “First Look” videos — I want YOU to see what a NEW user experience would look like.

These “First Look” videos are free for all to watch. If you want to download there's still a cost, but anyone can stream the video below for free.

All guests have unlimited streaming access for this free training; the video can be downloaded for a nominal fee

Hi Joseph, I’ve had On 1 Photo 10 and had used it and played with it but I did not to get their On 1 Photo Raw product.  Part of the reason but not the sole reason, I believe (and anyone correct me if I am wrong), for their better speed prior to their release of RAW was the fact that you imported your photos off of your card directly to your file folder structure on your HD, I.e., seen in Finder or Explorer.  Then you opened it in Browse and began to work on processing.  It seems ON 1 RAW wants you to do that also. That’s how their Browse function works, IMO  You can do that also in Lr and on import choose ADD rather than COPY.  However, in Lr doing so would not allow you to use all of the naming, metadata options as easily as using the COPY option and selecting where to import the photos in Finder.  Using the ADD feature cut down some of the import time in Lr, i found, but did not afford me my OCD control of naming, locating the file location and metadata input, etc.  I also had some of macphun’s apps and liked them and developed a great relationship with macphun.  So when Luminar came out I made the personal choice to go with them as my main plug in post-processing app and pretty much abandoned NIK (although on occasion I will still use Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro) and gave up on On 1. I follow Scott Davenport and he has done a lot of teaching on the use of On 1, but there are only so many apps that you can learn well and get use to and so I decided to go with Lr and Luminar.  For me I have developed a comfortable workflow and use of he apps.  I am not knocking anyone for choosing On1, or Capture 1, Photo Mechanic, etc.  They all have their strengths and weaknesses and we all have different needs and likes.  I wanted to watch this session to see how On 1 RAW works.  I have gotten so use to the UI of Lr and Luminar so that all of the other programs look a little foreign and less intuitive to me.  Watching this session was  a nice peak into On 1 RAW.  Should you do any future sessions, I’ll probably take a peak and sample a taste, so to speak. I do want to keep an open mind. But for now it’s Lr and Luminar all warts and all. And Luminar seems to have the potential to expand with their own DAM and maybe increase in speed.  Time will tell.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi Joseph. I’m a long-time Aperture user who has been looking for a replacement for a long time, and a couple of months ago I decided to start using ON1 Photo RAW instead–at least for a while. Although there are still some frustrations and issues, overall I’m liking it rather well, and most of the things that are missing are planned for a series of releases in the next few months (things like Versions, stacks, lens correction, history, and more).

I enjoyed watching your first look but did find myself wishing someone who knew the program had been watching to point out a few things to you, because I think your conclusion was a bit more negative than warranted. For example, in Browse you were trying to search on EXIF data. I agree this is needed and have suggested it to ON1, but you can actually do it now by creating a smart album. When you do that, you can select all kinds of criteria. You just can’t do it via the search (filter) feature.

You also were trying to figure out how to view the contents of subfolders of an indexed folder. That is also possible if you click the “Show Sub-Folder Contents” option at the bottom of the Browse window. I’d also recommend you look into the masking options for local adjustments and effects. They are really powerful–especially when combined with the “Apply To” feature under the gear menu.

I hope you’ll continue to do sessions on ON1 Photo RAW!

Thanks,
Jay

Well said; I to am a former (current) Aperture user.  Have been experimenting with Capture One.  I like its raw file and color controls.  Having trouble with their data/file management approach.  There is a learning curve there.  So in the mean time I decided to try On1 Photo RAW, since I have been using On1 10.  Their layering and masking tools are powerful and easier to understand than Photoshop.

I agree with you that I think Joseph rush through this program and did not do it fair justice.  You can use Lightroom for file mgmt. then go into RAW to do a Effects, layers, etc.  On1 does lay claim to be a DAM.  That’s why they have their software works well with Lightroom if you want to use the two together.

Also, I think Joseph had a earlier version that didn’t show it in it’s best light.  Anyhow, I think it’s a powerful tool.  Come on Joseph, take another look.

I've been in touch with ON1 since this video, and they've seen it. They actually felt I was totally fair although they thing there's some residue from beta builds on my system that was hampering abilities. I'll be doing a complete system flush on it and scheduling a screen share with them so they can show me what they like. I'll pick it up from there and come back to you all with a hopefully enhanced opinion for sure.

I just began poking around and I can tell that I’m very impressed. A large portion of you know I’m a Smugmug user, yet to be straightforward I don’t use it as much as I could. I began utilizing it quite a while prior, and my unique photography site was 100% in light of SmugMug, back while tweaking it was very nearly 100% in the domain of custom code, and was a genuine torment to do. Today it’s significantly less demanding, however on opening Zenfolio I instantly felt like it was unendingly more adaptable and simpler  even in my work at essay writing service to control the process.
