Aperture & Photo sync ? #1

Hi,

i’m still using Aperture (17 000 pics)  and wondering if there was a way to sync to Photos through iCloud.

More precisely, when I use my iPhone, I sync my Mac aperture photos to it, and they then appear in both Photos in my iPhone and Aperture on my Mac.

I was wondering if I could enable iCloud  for Photos (so far I haven’t) and be able to have it sync to all my devices, including my Mac, while still keeping Aperture as a master Catalog for all files. And so benefit from Photos on my Mac.

Any ideas ?

Nope, Aperture isn’t capable to use the iCloud photo library.

yes I’m aware of that. I was more thinking of syncing Aperture to iPhone as I do now. Syncing Photos on iPhone to the cloud, which should be possible. then Syncing cloud photos back to Photos on my mac

Ah, sorry.

Do you sync your complete Aperture library to  your iOS device? I haven’t tried it , but if the photos are placed in your photo library and iCloud photo library is enabled they should sync with photos.app on your Mac…I guess. Why not export your photos locally on your Mac, import them to Photos.app and let iCloud do the syncing? Maybe I’m still not getting the problem. ;-)

I sync the better shots from my Aperture catalog (rated 3 stars +). That way I have always on my phone my best photos wherever they come from (my iPhone or my reflex camera) , and also the more recent ones. The purpose of using the syncing facilities is to have it run automatically, without me doing anything, and beyond the first export. it could work but I’m afraid that if the iPhone syncs with iCloud, then it could duplicate the one imported in Aperture and synced back to it.

Well, i got my answer. I tried to set-up iCloud sync on the iPhone but the iPhone says I have to choose : it’s either iTune sync (which i Use to get Aperture pics on the iPhone) or iCloud sync (I wanted to use for Photos). Can’t have both

I have been working with Apple on the same issue.  I am set up similar.  The solution is both simple and complex.  I can tell you in general right now to give you the gist.  First, you will ultimately enable ( not at first) iCloud Photo Library.  With iOS or better, you will not suffer a massive duplication of photos.

You need to make sure your Aperture Library is backed up.  Then fully close Aperture. Launch Photos - assuming it’s the first time, it will ask you if you want to create or import a library to initiate a System Wide Library .  This System Wide Library will be the ultimate home for every picture you have, no matter how it originated or is currently stored.  [combined with iCloud Photo Library, you will ultimately have a single master library available on all devices)  Yes, you can limit the number and kind of photos stored on individual devices, but they ALL reside in their full format in iCloud.  Your device gets an abbreviated version until you ask it to do something different.

If you are already a current user of Photos, Apple recommended a different step to initiate the transfer from Aperture to Photos.  Launch Finder.  Then, Pictures/My-Aperture-Library-I-am-trying-to-work-with  AND Right Click that Library. scroll to “Open with… Choose:  Photos and the process should begin, with some initial questions etc.  Hopefully, you will get an all white Photos screen with a progress bar telling you it’s preparing the Library.  If you are successful, I believe Photos has some help for merging any outlier photos that did not make the jump.

Keep in mind that I am trying to give you this as an outline.  Having the Backed UP Aperture Library is key.  My Library was somehow corrupted ( possibly from transferring to several new computers and upgrades etc).  so I need to reinstall my Library from time machine.

give it a shot!

Hi A Raabe

I’m afraid what you are proposing will only initiate a transfer to Photos, but not enable subsequent syncing from Aperture or does it ?

If you add new photos to Aperture, do they appear in Photos ?
