I cannot see if my original question was posted correctly? Here it is again, just in case: Dear All, I’ve found some older threads on this topic but none that solved my problem. I am preparing to move away from Aperture, just because eventually we have to. Not sure if I will be using Luminar 3 or another solution yet. But to make sure that in future I am not stuck with yet another proprietary database system, I will be transferring my 146K photos to a neutral folder structure on my external WD drive which can then be accessed by whichever solution I eventually choose (and I can always easily change again later). And here’s where my problems start. I have tried all options of exporting (original file, with and without IPTC data, version etc.) but in all cases I loose key words. And for those images where I have used a script to adjust the original date (this concerns slides and negs that I scanned, which therefor initially had the scanning date iso the original date)  it does not keep the correct date. I am a long time Aperture user but far from an expert - so any simply worded tips or advice will be very welcome :-)

I’ve read up some more about my above question and now understand their is a difference between the file created date (which is the date of the export to my EHD) and the exif original photo data. The good news is that by using for instance the Previews Inspector tool I can indeed see the date and it is the correct (original) one. Also, if I now export not as original but as a version (although other advice I read online suggested to export as original) I also keeps the right date and when I use Luminar3 to access this photo, it also shows the exif date. But it seems my key words, ratings etc do not show up in Luminar. Any thoughts?

Hi stevendotmartin,

If you export the original with the option to add an XMP file, the keywords are embedded in that file and, true, Preview will ignore it but Photoshop, Lightroom Classic and On1 Photo Raw will read that file and probably other dedicated photo apps as well since XMP is an ISO standard. It depends on each developers to implement or not support for this metadata file format. When you export a version (jpg or tiff) the keywords are actually embedded in the file itself. If you open it in Preview and hit command-I (that’s i as in inspector not lowercase L) that will open the inspector window, and select the keywords tab ( the magnifying glass icon) you should see your keywords. Any photo app should be able read those if they choose to implement it. I have also noticed that Luminar 3 (with Libraries) doesn’t seem to show keywords anywhere, the Info tab only shows select EXIF fields. It’s not really a DAM software. Note that, color labels and ratings do not travel well across apps, because they are neither EXIF or IPTC supported.

Excellent, thank you for a very clear and helpful answer Michel! It has given me several new insights (incl how to find back keywords) and it has made me rethink if my forced move from Aperture will be to Luminar 3. It appeals to me in many ways (similar easy of use to Aperture) but some of the restrictions may be blocking issues. In any case, thanks for helping me move forward!
