I am new to Aperture 3. How do I create a diffused glow effect similar to the one in Photoshop Elements. It is sometimes used in portraits, but can also create a dreamy effect to other photos.

Betty,

Welcome to Aperture!

Aperture doesn’t have special effects filters built-in, but you can often achieve an effects-type look using a combination of corrective filters. The look you’re after can possibly be achieved by combining Skin Smoothing and Blur adjustments. That’s partially how I achieved the looks that are included in the Adjustment Presets Pack #1 called “Dreamy Look” and “Dreamy Look with Edge Blast”. Keep in mind that those effects are all starting points, and can be adjusted to your particular photo and taste.

If that’s not quite what you’re after, look around at some of the 3rd party plug-ins that are available for Aperture. Many of them are listed on Apple’s own plug-ins page.
