My library is on an external HD *with* my masters.
I suppose that makes it a managed library.
Since my thumbnails will not appear on my laptop if my external drive is ejected, I want to put my library in User/Pictures.
I tried using the Finder to move the library but it begins to move my masters too.
How can I make move my library to my user/pictures area and leav my msters on the external drive. (Its OK if that it will then make a referenced library.)
You are here
How do I move A3 library from external HD to internal HD

Thanks for replying dvm.
I have’t yet studied up on smart albums and your answer is an incentive to do so. However I am still doubtful that this is any easier than…
1. Copy library and masters to Mac drive. (taking many hours.)
2. Erase external drive and go to user/pictures/.aplibrary/showpackage contents/ and drag the masters from the mac drive back to the external drive. (again; many hours)
Am I really doing anything wrong?
Do not manually move the images from the aplib via Showpackage contents. Potential for messing things up. Number one is ok to do. Number two select all photos (under projects) and then select all with Command A. Go to file – Relocate Original and point it to a new location

Couldn’t you change from managed to reference files. Then simply move the library to your HD. The reference should stay on the external correct ?

You may get lots of ways to do this from others but here is my 2 cents. Smart Albums are your friend and you can make one that is searching for Managed images. Once those are found select all and move them to another pre made folder on your external drive. Id do this before moving your Lib. After that check AP to make sure everything or all files know where they are suppose to be… if all is good you can close AP and then move the smaller Lib to the internal Drive using the finder. After opening the internal drive lib and checking for accuracy make another Smart Album searching for Referenced images. Between the two Smart Albums you should be able to find all images. They’ll be in one or the other or you could have a combination. Cheers
