I'd like to sync the contents of a Smart Album to a folder on my local network, so that the folder mirrors the contents of the album. Is there any way to do this within Aperture, or perhaps with an applescript?
Yes there is, well, sort of. Copying images from a smart album to somewhere else isn’t a problem in AppleScript, but it won’t sync automatically. You could, however, launch the script as an import action so that it would run automatically each time you import new photos. Keeping track of which photos the script needs to copy to the destination, which it should delete from it and which it should ignore, could be a little tricky. It would save you a lot of trouble if you just make the script wipe the destination folder clean and copy everything from the smart album each time.
Following Morten’s note, if you did it via AppleScript, you could set it up to run on schedule using iCal, right? Have the script run automatically every night or week…

Let me know if you have any questions.
