Importing raw images into Aperture look different than in Finder #1

First of all let me tell you I have learned a lot from your great website, thank you very much for that! I however have a question regarding raw images and aperture.
Whenever I import my raw images into aperture (which I don't store in the aperture library but on an external disk) they first show up as they show up on my camera, but then aperture processes them and suddenly shows much more bright and hued images. If I look at the thumbnail of the same .cr2 image in the finder it shows the much greyer image as I wanted it and how I took it (settings on my canon 7d are -4 sharpness, -4 contrast, -2 saturation). How can I stop aperture from changing from what I see in the finder to this highly hued and contrasted images? This is particularly important for me because I take photos of bird flocks at dusk where not perce the quality is important to me but the fact that I want to identify the bird species in the flock (I am a researcher at the University of Cambridge studying flocking behaviour).
I hope you can help me with this. Thank you very much for your help.

Jol,

Great question. In fact, such a great question, that half-way through writing a response here, I decided to turn it into an entire “tip” post.

Check it out here: Why Do My Photos Look Different in Aperture Than They Did on the Camera LCD?.

I hope that helps!

Joseph, the link to the post you mention here seems to have gone wrong. I’d love to see the post, as I have just this problem.

I found the correct link. It must have changed slightly during the site migration. Only the last couple of words are different.

Note to Joseph: The FAQ has the old incorrect link as well.
