Library won't open after update #1

Hello all…..hoping someone can help. I have all my files stored on an external hard drive and recently upgraded Aperture to the latest version. When i went to open my library it told me i needed to upgrade it, which i did. When i now open Aperture it shows i have 0 photos and 0 files, however all the photos are still on the external hard drive.

The problem is that whilst some of the photos are stored in individual folders, there is one file that is 100MB which is named Aperture Library - i'm assuming this is the one that has all the file structure, etc in it and i can't for the life of me work out how to get it opened in Aperture.

I have reinstalled Aperture and have also held down the option apple keys when booting Aperture to try and repair, etc but none of this has worked.

If anyone has any advice it would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Hazwald

Leigh,

There are several ways to switch libraries.

1. With Aperture not running, double-click a library file and Aperture will open and make it the default library. (You can do this with Aperture already running with a different library open but it will ask you whether you want to switch or merge libraries).

2. When starting Aperture, hold down the option key (no command key) and a dialog will open asking which library to open.

3. With Aperture open, choose File->Switch library and choose the other library. (I forgot exact wording of the menu but it’ll be obvious when you try it.

Hello Thomas,

Thanks for that but i have done those things and none of them work. If i double click the library or hold down to pick a library i still get a blank Aperture. The frustrating think is that i can see the library and photos are there but Aperture refuses to acknowledge they exist.

I have successfully opened the file in iPhoto, however this just drops 60,000+ photo’s in there and i lose all file structure that i had to organise them.

It sounds a bit like the problem I had. The library you have now is indeed empty.
Do you have a library as a backup wich you can restore? It might do the trick.

I had a second duplicate Library on another external drive but that one has also done the same thing and is also showing up empty.

I recognize this, I think.
When I restored from time machine under my own user the file was empty. When I restored under my wife’s user I could reach my photo’s again. You could try to copy your library to another map or HD with a second user and see what happens. I’m not sure under which user to start Aperture.
