linking backed up referenced files to vault #1

How does one link an .aplibrary to referenced files if the files have been moved for backup?

I created a vault on an ext hd. The referenced files were moved to the same external hd as a backup, in case.

If my hd went belly up, how would I reconnect the vault, with its meta, mods, previews kept intact, without reimporting - essentially starting all over?

There is a command within Aperture to reconnect lost originals.

First you select the Photos icon in the library pane to show all photos in the library at once (make sure the browser filter is set to “Showing All” which isn’t the default. Then type Command-A (or Edit->Select All) to select every image in the library.

Now select File->Locate Referenced Files… and you’ll be presented with a dialog where you can show Aperture where the originals are. As long as you’ve kept the same folder structure for your originals, you should only have to show it the first image and it will find the rest on its own.

Thanks for the info. Those well-described details about what sequence to follow to select all, especially informative.

With a test vault I’ve been trying different scenarios, trying to prevent an unpleasant surprise. Aperture does seem very robust.

Indirectly related: As a refugee from LR, I sometimes wish Aperture used the Finder for file management, so, as in LR, you could add a jpg to a referenced folder then just update the folder and would not have to import, as in Aperture.
