So I decided to get two new D7100’s this week. My computer is a 2010 iMac 3.06 i3 running Snow Leopard and 12 gig’s of RAM. Which means I’m using Aperture 3.2.4. I just found out today I won’t be able to process any RAW images from this camera. Hard to believe there’s no support for this on my OS. Also, that I can’t upgrade to the latest Aperture.
Oh well, I guess I can get by with only jpeg’s.
Raw compatibility is managed in OS X Digital Camera RAW, not in Aperture. It is true that the latest versions of DCR are only delivered to the latest OS X. I have a late 2009 iMac running Mavericks and the latest DCR / Aperture. Have you tried upgrading to Mavericks?

I’ve never tried to upgrade. I really like Snow Leopard. It’s stable, Aperture is real fast, no quirks. I’ve only used three Mac operating systems since the nineties. I also have so much software I’m running that wouldn’t work. But it looks like I jumped the gun by already selling one of my D300’s. Maybe I better find a D700 or D3.
Also, I had no idea that I possibly could not run the latest OS with my system. Thanks for the info.
Apple definitely sunsets hardware as they upgrade OS X. You could clone your OS disk to an external HD, boot off that external HD, upgrade it to Mavericks, and test your software packages. That would be a safe way to test whether any of your software is incompatible with Mavericks, to see whether Mavericks has performance issues on your hardware, and to see how the upgrade process works. You may be forced to upgrade to Mountain Lion first. Using the external HD will guarantee your internal HD OS goes safely untouched.

You’re full of good ideas. Thanks.
I know I could use a computer upgrade. It’s just frustrating when everything you have works so good but you run into walls concerning software and updates.
Mike - I have a Spring 2010 MBP with a 500gig 7200rpm drive and 8gigs of RAM. Aperture 3.5.1 runs fine on it, along with Mavericks. Your rig will run both just fine.
Given that the upgrade to Mavericks is…free…and once you upgrade to Mavericks, the App Store will see that you have Aperture (and probably iLife and iWork), and add those to the Purchased list in the App Store, it’s worth it.
Do what Walter suggested and clone your drive first. Then do an upgrade to Mavericks and your other app’s.
I have a late 2008 MBP with 8 gig ram and a 7200 HD and it runs Mavericks and the latest Aperture. The initial problem I had with Mavericks was the second monitor support. I have a Dell 2711 connected by a mini-display port to display port cable. Mavericks 10.9.0 did not support that connection and my display was blank. This has now been fixed.

Yes, it is annoying when technology moves on beyond what we find comfortable and familiar.
Fortunately, if you have the hardware that can run it … there really is little to fear from updating to Mavericks. Yes, there have been some issues for some users, now those bugs appear to have been squashed. Best part is, Mavericks and the update to Aperture 3.5.x are FREE!
I too was leery of leaving behind my old favorite PPC apps that could be invoked via Rosetta. Fortunately, most (if not all) of my favorites have been updated or have suitable replacements with better solutions that do not rely on old technology to get the job done.
There really is no reason to not explore stepping up to Mavericks. Especially when you are introducing the latest and greatest technology on the camera side.
