Referenced files on Network Drive #1

Hey there,

Does anyone have their referenced aperture library on their main hard disk with the referenced photos on a network share? I’d like to use the new merge libraries feature in Aperture 3 to have the same synced libraries on both my iMac and Macbook Pro without having to unplug my drobo each time I want to work on one or the other…

I’m not even sure if this is the best approach…

Thoughts?

Michael,

I don’t know about Aperture 3, but in Aperture 2 network mounted drives (NAS) were NOT officially supported. I don’t know or understand why it makes a difference, but it was definitely not a supported function. Probably has to do with the risk of the files changing under your feet.

In theory I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as long as no one updated the master files. You’d want serious speed though… even loading over a gigabit network would be slow.

Since you’re a Drobo user, the DroboShare would give the ability but over ethernet. Maybe it’s fast enough… but I kinda doubt it. DroboElite is a more advanced (and expensive) way to do it. But again… it may not be officially supported. I doubt that it is or it’d be on Apple’s 200+ new features page.

Joseph,

That’s kind of what I was wondering. What is the best approach on using two machines with one library?

Michael,

I wrote a post when Aperture 3 was first released about the feature that excited me most, titled “Aperture 3—A Game Changer (Multiple Macs, Syncing Projects, & More)”. Have a look at that as that’s how I manage multiple Macs.

Hit me back here (or at the post) with any other questions about it.

That’s perfect. Actually makes me thing about moving from referenced to managed but I’m not sure about that yet. I still have some use for Nikon Capture NX 2…
