Okay, I'm going to reformat my iMac and reinstall Mountain Lion and all my apps, nice clean start (I've had a lot of installs and deletion of software). I've done this on my Windows machines, but my first time on my iMac.

I'm okay with all my documents and that stuff, I have all that stuff backed up. I want to make sure that I get my Aperture and iPhoto libraries intact copied. All my files are managed, is as simple as copying the aperture and iPhoto libraries and then moving then in place after the reinstall? Is there anything else that I need to copy off and reinstall?

Thanks!

Joseph,

Just wanted to post an update to my reinstall a clean copy of Mountain Lion. I copied my Aperture and iPhoto libraries (along with everything else) to my external drive and did a clean install of Mountain Lion, after a little trouble. (Lesson learned: you cannot select the option key and get a selection of which drive to use as boot with a wireless keyboard. You have to select the boot drive- USB in my case- from the system preferences menu. After that all went well.

I moved my saved libraries back in place and everything opened as it should. The only thing I forgot to do, I think, was save a Aperture preference file, is that we’re our IPTC setups are located? Anyways, I had to rebuild my presets, good practice using your training videos again.

The only thing I’m not sure on, my vault that I had before, should I delete that a make a new one?

Thanks.

Mark,

Glad to hear it mostly went well.

The file I think you’re looking for is the Metadata Presets, located in ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture.

It’s probably not necessary to start a new Vault, however if you have the space to create a new one without deleting the old one, I’d do it.

Mark,

Nope, that’s all there is to it. It’s worth verifying the copy on another Mac if you can before deleting the original and wiping the drive, of course, but other than that, there’s nothing else to do.

Thanks Joseph, I think that you had posted something about this in the past, but I just wanted to make sure.

Probably do it this weekend, I post how it went for anyone that might be interested.
