The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera is amazing. Configuring it through your ATEM is pretty straightforward once you know the one setting that has to be right. White balance has some shortfalls which can be overcome with Lift, Gamma and Gain adjustments, but I'd still like to see more WB capabilities. There are no software scopes on the camera or the ATEM so you need yet more hardware to do that accurately, which I talk about here as well. Overall it's a great camera and it does what I needed — it has virtually zero latency between live and the SDI signal, which is critical to my workflow. Sounds like a great deal. Look for physical damage (i.e. dents). While you may not care about a dent, it does indicate that it was dropped and may have internal damage. Also it may signify it wasn’t taken care of. I think that’s the ultimate thing to look for… signs of neglect. If it’s dirty, dusty, dented, whatever, it’s easy to dismiss it (“I can clean that easily”) but it’s an indication of how well it was taken care of. Good luck and enjoy!

Do you lose your Camera Setting and Media Pool when you turn off your Mac? I tried to store my settings with the "Save Start Up State" and I save my switcher setup to XML from the File menu but it always goes back to default even if I Recall.

The settings are stored in the ATEM RAM, not the computer. Which means every time you launch the app on a computer, it has to re-download all of the settings from the ATEM. If you reboot the ATEM, you may have to reload settings from a computer. And yes, mine runs 24/7 and is connected to a UPS.

Nope. I'm mixing a lot of sources; many don't offer genlock.

My camera to subject distance is 2.5' with the green screen being 4' behind subject. Lighting will be high 45 degree side fills with subject key light. My question is regarding lens/camera... My setup appears to be similar to yours and was wondering what lens you are using now and are you still happy with Micro Studio Camera 4K?

Hey Matt, thanks. Yeah, the BMD cameras have been great for this setup, and I love the ATEM. The lens on the main camera is an Olympus 17mm f/1.8 which has worked well for this setup. On the rolling camera, it’s usually a Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8. Be aware that the BMD cameras get pretty noisy if you increase the gain, and also be aware that the sharpening settings NEED to be tested and set best for your setup. If I recall correctly, when shooting 4K I set the sharpening to normal, and in 1080p I set it to either middle or max. If you over-sharpen it looks terrible. When I was first setting it up I seriously thought something was wrong with the camera! Overall, you’ll want a lot of light to make it look good, and use scopes to get your exposure just right. The BMD cameras have incredible control when paired with the ATEM, so you can really adjust lift gamma and gain independently and nail the exposure. Good luck!

i think you could also record a video with grey card, import it to resolve. correct it there with only std wheels and just copy settings to atem - I suppose they’d work the same.

Hey PhotoJoseph, I was wondering if I could get some help info from you on how you have your audio routed "in ear" for you to hear. We are using a complete Blackmagic Design workflow (ATEM Talkback > ATEM 1 M/E > Fiber to Cameras > Audio from separate mixer being fed to ATEM >Audio/Video being output to PC workstation to livestream). Could you PM me if you have a moment - I need to have that audio monitoring but for two people on set and 1 person as a sideline reporter and I am trying to come up with an effective workflow. Hey there… it's a Pyle PDMIKC5 mic (a podium mic, not an actual talk-back mic, because it has a simple on/off switch and talkback mics are $$) plugged into the audio mixer, the XR16. Yeah, I watched the video now. I think it looks just slightly different, and all the advantages of the workflow is what interests me of this camera. Hopefully next year I can make that little project happen.

How do you record the video? Do you need an external recorder attached to ATEM like the Ninja? I was considering two of these cameras to be able to record a live theater event but I'm still confused on all the extra equipment required. I don't need live streaming. The camera's would be mounted remote so no operator during the show.
Play happens twice per year, April and November.

The HyperDeck Shuttle would work except I need to record 4K video to allow for punch-in in post since the cameras will be unattended.

Yes, an external recorder is required. I've had issues with recording to Ninja from ATEM so I have a cheap BlackMagic 1080p HyperDeck Shuttle I use for these live shows, but it has no screen. http://jal.bz/2haAIfn So you would need some kind of monitor to configure it, then you can record from the Cinema camera straight to the HyperDeck. So for your event, you'd need two of the cameras (and lenses of course), and you could use one HDMI monitor to configure it as long as you don't need to make changes during the show. Once it's set, just plug in the HyperDeck and hit go. But honestly… if you're not doing the remote control through an ATEM, then you'd be better off getting two cameras like the LUMIX G7 http://jal.bz/2ilST6J and having everything self contained.
