ADDITIONAL NOTES:
My friends at Blackmagic watched the video and offered some additional information
1. Webcam input doesn't work on WIndows, so at least for now, you'll need to do the "hdmi out from ATEM through the UltraStudio" that I mentioned in the setup
2. There's a file size limitation to H.264 which will hit at around 1.5 hours of recording, and the ATEM will automatically create a new file when that happens. Resolve will NOT automatically import that new file, so best practices would be to stop and restart recording manually, and import the new files, during a natural break in the program, before that 1.5-ish hour limit is reached.
3. There is a timecode slip issue with the ATEM SDI Extreme ISO at 59.94 (only the SDI version and only at 59.94) which makes Replay unusable.

Here's the Discord post with instructions: https://discord.com/channels/916716171007516682/1326223823485276181 (you must be a channel member to access; join at https://youtube.com/photojoseph/join
@@photojoseph Thank you after reading thorugh some more information and looking at our equipmentI understand. Thanks so much
@ timecode comes in over USB from the multiview. There’s nothing special to set up. Not quite sure what you’re missing? You saw the pinned note (you’re replying to it) so I assume you’ve seen the windows limitations already.
I first want to say that I love the video. I am an instuctional technologist at a small school that has helped get a broadcasting class going, and I used your channel a lot for my research on equipment and then how to use the equipment like the ATEM. In our class we try to teach live streaming as well at some sporting events. So, this feature would be great to get up and running. But, we are a PC school no Macs. So, I just have a quick question could you point me toward the time code in the video where you talk about #1 and setting it up and I will figure it out from there. I have watched several times and either I am just missing it or I am not completely understanding what #1 means. Thank You
@theseenaus for the first, it’s just a “working on it” and for the second, they haven’t confirmed or denied anything. BMD is extremely tight lipped when it comes to future development.
If your friends at Blackmagic are reviewing, it would be great to know when webcam input support for Windows will be available and also if there are any plans to add the audio muting to the UltraStudio HD Mini!
Amazing demo - thank you
Glad you liked it!
Where did you get those HDMI cables? they are nice.
They’re actually RØDE cables 😁
You joust unlocked a whole new ball game for me .. Thanks ❤❤❤
That’s awesome to hear!
Excellent video, well done!.🎉🎉🎉
Than you kindly!
I wonder if this would work with the da Vinci resolve on the iPad Pro
Where abouts?
@ you make a very solid point I’m broadcast engineer and director for a TV station. I was just actually looking into it and the iPad does not actually have a full suite of da Vinci resolve so it wouldn’t work either way if they would allow da Vinci resolved to have a full suite of it then it would work because you can install drivers on the iPad. If you would ever like to do a collaboration I would love that. I have some very cool things you might like to see
Ok, so I was mistaken about thunderbolt — the latest iPad’s single port is thunderbolt 4. However it still only has one. You require two connections; USB for the ATEM and Thunderbolt for the UltraStudio. Maybe a Thunderbolt hub would work — maybe. But you still have two problems. 1. The UltraStudio requires a driver to be installed, which doesn’t exist on iPadOS. 2. Resolve needs to have the Replay features, which it does not on iPadOS.
@@photojoseph I believe it would work. It’s got da Vinci resolve. It’s got type C out which I believe it’s a thunderbolt port pair that with mix effects and I think it has a chance
No chance. It has one USB port and no Thunderbolt.
i cant see the ssd thats conected to my atem extream iso im on windows, any tips ?
As a Mac user, I don't know why that's happening. There are Windows users discussing Replay in my Discord; that's a great place to talk about issues like this. youtube.com/photojoseph/join
@@photojoseph Im with 9.6.3 version atm and i cant see the ssd thats plugged to the atem
Yeah, someone else just went through this — make sure your ATEM has the latest software installed. That fixed it for the other user!
Very interesting and clean explanation thankyou for the amazing tutorial. I have a doubt that how many camera inputs can be configured for instant replays like is there any particular limit?
@photojoseph  oh thanks mate
You’re not configuring anything for replay — any input can be used. So the limit is six, since there’s eight inputs and two are used for Key and Fill.
Really great video, thank you for all the time and effort you've clearly put into explaining things... I'm struggling with a couple of bits. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be extremely grateful... I have the SDI Extreme ISO. (Just picked up this morning to avoid having to lug about the big black box with the constellation etc in when flying!) Couldn't get hold of the Media 10G yet as stockist in UK - so picked up another Ultrastudio 4K. I have a Samsung T7 shield plugged in.

I'm running on Windows 11. (Just spotted the limitation regarding the SDI and 59.94 - which is ideally what I'd like to run for live sports capture, but happy to get up and running on lower frame rate for time-being)
The Atem is connected from USB C to USB A (as laptop never identifies it through USB C to C)
The Ultrastudio is connected through Thunderbolt.
No matter what I seem unable to locate the files being recorded to SSD from Resolve.
I saw comment regarding no Multiview for Windows currently so initially went from Atem Pro SDI out to Blackmagic Bidirectional converter to change to HDMI - nothing showed up?
I wondered if there was anyreason I couldn't just go from SDI out to SDI in on the Ultrastudio - still no trace or ability to locate those files that are being written to the SSD.

I changed the input device to UltraStudio to Capture Device and Monitor Device in Davince (as Blackmagic not an option for Windows currently)

Not sure whether I've missed something out, or whether the functionality just isn't available at all for Windows at the moment with current configuration.
I also have the Replay Editor, but haven't even tried to bring that to the party just yet!

Thanks again for the great video and fingers-crossed I'll get it working eventually...
@@mikeosborn9538 amazing!
So significant progress made today... all about the firmware update on the Atem. Seems so obvious in hindsight. 😮 Needless to say updated Atem, selected option in Switcher update to ensure visibility in Explorer was selected. Lo and beholdthe SSD drive clearly visible and able to select the files. Replay editor plugged in. Just need to familiarise with the newco trolley surface now... thanks again for such fantastic support and patience.
@mikeosborn9538 very curious. I see you’ve joined the discord; post the windows question there in the Replay channel. More windows users there who hopefully can help.
@@photojoseph Wow - thanks again for such a speedy and comprehensive response.
The ISO files were being recorded to the SSD. I was able to check and confirm the same by detaching the drive from ATEM and plugging directly into Laptop.
The SDI multiview feed into the Ultrastudio 4k is working. I can see the multiview in the preview window and have a duplicated HDMI monitor to see the overall feed.
I'm also able to control the blackmagic cameras through ATEM software control - either when connected by USB or even if just using a Network switch with both the laptop and ATEM attached.
I just seem unable to see the ATEM anywhere in network settings and therefore haven't managed to select the SSD drive as the media source to ingest into Davinci.
Thanks again for all your efforts and support... will certainly let you know if any further progress made....
Cheers!
Thanks for watching, and for explaining your setup so clearly. A nice refreshing change from "it doesn't work" 😅 Also, I'd like to encourage you to join the channel youtube.com/photojoseph/join; lots of experience in the Discord you get access to.

Weird that you need to use a USB-C to USB-A cable instead of C to C. But I've experienced that myself with other hardware on Mac, so who knows… oddities but shouldn't affect this.

"No matter what I seem unable to locate the files being recorded to SSD from Resolve" -- meaning you don't see the SSD at all, or you see the SSD but not the files? If it's the latter, then I'm really lost. But assuming the former (you don't see the drive), I have two things to try. First, can you see it over the network? Disconnect USB, have the PC and ATEM on the same LAN (and make sure the ATEM Software Control sees the ATEM). Once you know they see each-other, see if you can find the ATEM in the network explorer, and on my PC I can see the ATEM there, and it wants me to log in (I used "guest" and "guest", although maybe leaving it empty works too), and see if the drive shows up. This isn't ideal as its not as fast, but at least you'll know that the drive is visible.

I think more likely though is that it's the T7. That particular model Samsung has been problematic for a lot of people. If you can, try another SSD. I recommend OWC (the one I use in the video is Envoy Pro Elektron https://geni.us/p74qJ ).

As to the multiview -- yes, 100% just go SDI out of the ATEM into the US4K Mini, and set that is the capture device in Resolve. That's actually what I explain in the video when I say that that's the way you have to do it on bigger ATEMs. At the time of recording, unfortunately I didn't know that the webcam feature didn't work in Windows, or I would have noted it there.

Keep us potsed!
tem futuro não.
e por que você diz isso?
Great video with all the important details. I have invested in the Replay Keyboard and little did I know that I will need BMD Media Player 10G or Ultra Studio 4K. Now my keyboard is gathering dust.

My question would be, if I want to run both the replay video and sports graphics using Ultrastudio 4K on ATEM mini Extreme SDI ISO would that be possible or the Ultrastudio will only send the key and fill source of one software at a time?
I'm assuming you'd be using some other software package to run the sports graphics? I think it's safe to say that you can NOT do both at the same time with a single US4K. Not only is the US4K in a special mode (that whole "mute" thing), but Resolve and whatever other app you're using would be sending conflicting data to the hardware. I'm quite sure you'd need two US4K to handle that. Likely even on two different computers, as managing both on one system sounds tricky -- but, maybe possible. I don't know.
You didn’t mention that you are connected to the ATEM via the network to access the SSD. Isn’t the SSD not accessible over USB-C?
Great tutorial nonetheless!
The USB is accessible over USB. That's how you want to access it, for performance. Over the network would be much more limiting. I had the network connected because of course you'd need that to stream, but the connection is over USB. You don't have to do anything special -- just connect the computer and ATEM over USB, and the ATEM shows up in the Locations (on a Mac), as I showed.
How can you teach me anything, when you fail at producing clear vocal audio, it sounds "hollow" (bathroom audio?), and no, it's not my computer, educational videos of others sound just fine.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
@@photojoseph I think I have watched this video about 5 times now and audio is crystal clear my end! Keep up the good work.
What are you even talking about. The audio is perfectly clear and far from hollow. Also, you’re welcome for making a video after doing all this research and testing. Sheesh.
Marvelous instructional video as usual Joseph. Having an Extreme ISO, the Replay keyboard but NO Ultrastudio this was spot-on. The manual is not bad but this video answered my question what gear do you need for what type of workflow? Ranging from a simple magician setup (aka Joseph in action :) to a full fledged Olympic game coverage (so to say). And your humorous hints towards BMD should be appreciated by them! The only thing is that you packed so much info in this video I do need to replay it. Not live..so just pressing << in YT.
Thank you, I appreciate that! And yes, there's a lot in here… don't worry, I don't mind if you watch it more than once! haha
BMD needs to add the ability to jam sync time code on the ATEM so bad. Couldn’t be any different than their cameras. I have to write it to the audio on my studio cameras because as soon as I plug them into the atem it automatically over rides my jam sync.
@ I put it on your comments in hopes BMD reads your comments 👍👍
yeah I agree. They really do need to let the user control the timecode!!
So if I wanted to do this with the studio monitor 3g, would the connections be as you have at the 7 min mark of the video but with the studio monitor in place of the ultra 4k? Thunderbolt from Mac to studio monitor 3g then hdmi from studio monitor 3g to one of the inputs on the atem mini extreme iso?
That's exactly right. Just swap out the UltraStudio 4K Mini for the UltraStudio Monitor 3G. You also won't need an SDI to HDMI converter, since the USM3G has both HDMI and SDI out.
Fantastic video Joseph! This is the first video I’ve seen that covers the full replay workflow end to end in such detail. Top work as always 👏
What happened to yours Alex?
Thank you sir!
GREAT! I use this feature since summer on movie sets as replay of shots that we make for director and clients (it is extremly easy and cheap compared to other systems like Qtake, it has almost every same feature and something is even easier.). Since then i can walk out of set with "rough cut of what we made for director to compare continuity and to see if it matches his idea. The only downgrade is that i can't use 2 cameras on 2 individual monitors for playback. That would be huge! But thanks for this video. You showed me things i did not use earlier that will help my workflow. Finally someone find some information about this new feature.
@ Thanks for responding. These are all great ideas. Unfortunately everyone always wants 1 monitor for 1 camera because on 1 monitor they always say it is too small. And bringing 65” tv on mobile set to have it in big is very bad for mobility.
That is so cool! What an interesting workflow. One question — you said you can’t use two monitors for two cameras. I believe you mean that with two cameras feeding into the ATEM, you want to see them both on big screens, right? The ATEM Extremes have two HDMI (or SDI) outputs, plus the USB webcam output, all of which can be set to any input (or Program, Preview, etc.). Are you already using both of those for something else? Another method — however you’re bringing the cameras into the ATEM, you could insert a mini converter just before the ATEM and use that as a splitter to send a copy of the image to another monitor. That’d do the trick, too. I hope that helps!

UPDATE
Oh wait — you said for playback . Ok, hmm… what if, instead of using a UltraStudio for playback, you used an HDMI monitor and the “HDMI Clean Feed” feature, and used it as I said you can’t , where you see all the inputs at once? You wouldn’t have two cameras on two monitors, but you’d have all cameras on one monitor.
Thank you for this Joseph, the first fully detailed complete walk-through explanation available covering all aspects that I've seen to date - an excellent tutorial...
One problem sadly and still not fixed if you are a Windows user is that the Multiview is not available from within Resolve - it shows up in W10 itself fine and nada mas... Have taken it up with BMD but to no avail - Works fine on a MBPro...
Thanks again Joseph and a Very Happy New Year, John
Thank you. And yes, I’ve learned that since publishing. There’s a pinned comment with a few updates. I know the webcam thing is something they are working on. What a bummer!!
does that work with the Free davinci version?
@ thanks!
Yes!
This is an incredible video! Thank you so much for taking the time and walking through these setups!

Your tutorials are wonderful!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!!
Sir, If I've to add a computer screen as an input to my ATEM Extreme ISO - I might've to have two computers or have two monitors to give that as a input to my ATEM Extreme ISO incase if I've to use these ideas. But what you've shared on this episode is incredible !! I thought it is only possible only with the device Davinci Resolve Replay Editor. :) Thanks :)
@@photojoseph Forgive my inability to express my doubts with proper words. Yes Sir, I exactly meant the same thing. Thanks Sir :) Have a wonderful day. :)
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but if you're asking if you can use a single computer to have dual external monitors; one to share your screen on the ATEM and one to do the Video Clean Feed out, then yes, that should work.
Thank you Joseph, this is finally a very useful tutorial on the instant replay functions of Blackmagic hardware and software. Very well explained. I have an ATEM TV HD8 ISO myself and am still waiting for the update for the growing files, as announced in the NAB 2024 video. Since I need it myself for sports broadcasts, I would really appreciate it if you could give a more precise figure for the latency mentioned. I don't understand why there isn't more information about it from BMD. Replay seems to me to be a very profitable extension and not just an additional function.
Thank you for the kind words! On the latency… hmm, I would assume it's not published because it'd vary depending on too many variables. Drive speed possibly being one, but the other being bandwidth on the USB bus. That said, if I do end up getting the Replay panel, or if I do get the hardware to do a video on setting up with HyperDecks and a Cloud Store, then I will certainly measure this then. I can say though that it's a couple of seconds behind, which is what the manual says, and I can confirm that just from using it (not measuring it).
I do not see video clean feed on my Mac. It goes from primary display to viewer mode. I do not see video clean feed option.
@gamerfirst238 oh bummer… sorry!
@ in my research it is studio only feature and I have the regular version. I did my research after I posted the comment.
Weird, I replied, but it's gone. Maybe because I included links to screenshots. You'd think YouTube would allow ME to post links in my comments… sheesh!! OK… those menus are missing if Resolve doesn't see the second monitor. So my assumption is that either you haven't yet connected the ATEM, have but it's mirroring, or have and have disabled mirroring but launched Resolve before disabling it. Whatever the reason, if the menu is missing, Resolve doesn't see the ATEM / "second monitor". If none of that is the case -- are you using Resolve or Resolve Studio? I wonder if this is a Studio-only feature…
best video out there. thanks!
Thank you!
FYI, replay is currently broken with the ATEM SDI. It has an issue with drifting time code that hasn’t been fixed yet.
BMD tells me it's only at 59.94 and they are actively working on it.
Oh no! That’s not good. Thanks for the update.
Thanks. I'm not sure that I need replay for anything I do but I've bookmarked this for when I suddenly do need it.
Right on!
Once I’ve tried to access atem using network to offload a file during an event. It hanged and i needed to reboot it. Ssd was samsung t7 or something like that. So, a big question how stable it is, because sometimes recording can drop for no reason, even with new branded ssd.
@@photojoseph Biggest problem for me that i can't reproduce thin issue. SSD may work well for many month and suddenly record button starts to blink. You can miss this blinking, if you use atem as iso recording device and hide it somewhere inside rack.
Once i have unplugged mac from usb a, and usb b with hdd started blinking)) and that was the start of my livestream)) so, i could not reboot it to start record again.
Good thing that files looks to be finalised, so, not much data is lost. But, as far as i remember, a year ago files could be corrupted.
One of the Samsung T drives is notoriously a p.o.s. I’m afraid it might be the T7. I’d do some forum searching for reports of problems. I’ve used the T5 and the OWC (link in description) with no issues.
Great work, great contribution, great video with excellent quality! Very grateful!
Much appreciated! Thank you 😊
Is your background real?! I love the stand for the light on the right. I'm looking for a similar stand with a smaller footprint to pop those COB lights on if needed at events.

This is the best explanation yet. on how does Atem know to play the replay clip? Kudos, Thanks.
Haha yes, that’s my studio! And that stand is just a small light stand. Nothing special or fancy. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
great video. What are the minimum specs for the computer to function properly.
Thanks! You’ll need to check the specs for Resolve on their website. And it’d have to support Thunderbolt 3 to support the UltraStudio.
Can the Hyperdeck Studio HD be used to replay the program out of the Atem as well as display stingers with alpha channel. Plz forgive the greeness I'm new to live-streaming 😓
Not at this time. The “mute” functionality is what’s needed. Hopefully Blackmagic will add that to more hardware.
Great investigation and resolution Joseph, thank you a lot
Thanks for watching!
If you have a computer with a Decklink card (Duo or larger) that can use SDI ports as input or output, could you still get the same features as you would with the Hyperlink? Meaning Key and Fill?
Yeah; it’s that “mute” function that’s needed. Email Blackmagic and post about it in the forums!
I have a replay setup with a Win10 computer and Duo2 card in it. While the Duo2 can produce a Fill and a Key when using CasparCG or SPX-Graphic. With Davinici Resolve I can NOT create a fill and a seperate key out. Hopefully it will be implemented in future releases.
I would like to think so BUT those aren’t listed as compatible — only the US4K mini and MP10G are. And that could have to do with how the key/fill is implemented — through that weirdly named “mute SDI” menu. I have a feeling that it only knows how to deal with those two devices. The good news is you can try it for free!
Awesome work! Would really appreciate if u can do playback using multiple hyperdeck studio plus as welll 😊
Love that!!
@@photojoseph Hopefully this video gets over 100K because this is the exact question I have as well. Watching for the second time lol.
Haha that would have to be sponsored by Blackmagic. The hyperdecks I own don’t offload over the network (although I really really want six of ‘em!) so that’d be a major expense. But let’s get this video over 100k views then I’ll ask them directly!
Bravo! Great video as always!
Thank you kindly!
Great tutorial, do you know if this works with the UltraStudio HD Mini to access key and fill?
@@aaronpk so, wait… “mute” is both audio and splitting the signal to key/fill? So bizarre. And I know it’s more than just audio because I wasted an hour troubleshooting why my UltraStudio was no longer playing video while editing after recording this, and finally realized it was because that was enabled. Drove me nuts — hence the inserted note about it in the video.
@ without the mute feature, it would be blasting the replay audio on the stream while you're scrubbing through it finding the spot to replay from. I have no idea why they didn't/can't add it to the HD Mini though, seems like not that complicated of a thing to do.
@@aaronpk good call. I do wonder why they complicated things with “mute”.
The Ultrastudio HD Mini doesn't have the mute feature that's required. Keep an eye out on the Blackmagic site for a firmware update that says the mute feature has been added.
It’s not listed as a compatible UltraStudio. Does it have dual SDI outputs?
All you need now, is that keyboard 🤣
haha yep! I have zero use for it in my own productions, but I'd love to do a deep dive on it. We'll see how well this video does!
