Hey everyone! I’ve started an entire series of tips on the ATEM, called “ATEM (mini) Tips” — check them out here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRe8DcOhgslpSQkH8ycUW9xCmNg2I4b0y and don’t forget to subscribe to both this channel https://youtube.com/c/photojoseph?sub_confirmation=1 and my LIVE channel https://www.youtube.com/photojosephlive?sub_confirmation=1 — thanks!!!
@@realtalkradiowithdanlane yes, that was added long after this video was made. I covered that feature here: ATEM Mini / Pro Update for Audio Sync Delay!
https://youtu.be/H07ZW72CSD0
The software has a delay switch to sync your audio and video in the audio section.
Hello Joseph , Thank you for the videos, Question , what is the best way to scale back up to 4K from the Atem mini pro
@@photojoseph thanks for answering my question. So, would this allow me stream 4k. Do you also do Consultation
That’d be the Decimator 12G-cross. Most versatile tool you’ll ever invest in. https://geni.us/yxt7FM
Can I hook up a usb webcam to the ATEM? I ordered an adapter but it didn’t work
No. The USB port is not for cameras.
Hi, So I have a question about streaming using zoom and the mini . well in general actually some feed back issues. id love to pick your brain
I you have time ..
http://www.photojoseph.com/1to1 for brain picking!
How do you prevent overheating of the Atem?
@@photojoseph Oh yes, I do use a fan . We also experience of heating of the MacBook as well. I've been trying different ideas all summer long.
@@michaelgabbard4761 never seen video lag due to heat; interesting. 85F is a warm environment but nothing for electronics. But an extra breeze (small fan) might be worth considering if you’re working in warm settings.
@@photojoseph I keep it raised to prevent blocking and shaded. I’ve had better luck using a metal monitor stand because it helps defuse the heat. Direct sunlight is the worst. Once temperatures hit around 85, the video starts to lag.
Don’t block the vents and it won’t overheat. It gets hot, yes, but it won’t overheat. (Obviously under normal environment; put it in trailer in Dubai with no AC and it’ll overheat, but, you know…)
There is an option in the ATEM software control to delay the audio by up to 8 frames.
Not when this video was made, there wasn’t.
I am using Streamlabs Obs to stream to YouTube and the atem mini pro. I have a switching problem on the livestream. I notice that when I switch source on atem mini pro it is fast, but on YouTube it takes 30 seconds to see switch from camera 1 to camera 2
How do I fix this isue
just interested in which small display you are using in your show as I keep having issues with HDMI out connected small monitor that they keep telling me "no signal". So I am interested in which one you are using here?
That little monitor was an ATOMOS Ninja recorder. If you’re getting compatibility errors, first make sure you have the latest firmware. BMD made some fixes that addressed lots of monitors some time ago. Go to the BlackmagicDesign website and download the latest version of the ATEM software, and run that to update your ATEM. If your monitor still doesn’t work, then there’s no way to know if any other monitor will other than testing. That said, I’ve never actually seen that error myself, and I’ve plugged in a LOT of different displays. But I have heard about this issue from other viewers.
Hiya Joseph. Great content. I have a PTZ connected to one port but I am wanting to inflate the image to hide the PTZ controls. Possible?
Upstream key, size 1.x
I saw this video 2yrs ago (you can see my comment from another guitar acct 2yrs ago) and purchased the device. Today, I shared this video with a friend, and half hour ago, he placed an order for ATEM mini.
In last 2 yrs, I have been used to a lot of Blackmagic gears. ATEM Mini, Mini Pro, the full hardware (rack based) switcher, and the Blackmagic cameras. And controlling them from an iPad.
It all started with this one video. So wanted to say thank you! 🙏🏼
Wow that’s awesome, thank you! I’m going to share this with my friends at Blackmagic. You made my day and it’s only 6:45am!!
haha i totally agree bro!
Thank you for your video, Just bought one! using it to broadcast a festival 🙂
@@photojoseph A quick question; is it possible to use an iPad as a preview monitor?
Sweet, good luck!
Terrific presentation.
Thank you so much for this explanation, i finally understand how too use the Atem mini...Thank you so much, keep up the good works
Thank you SO much for the captions!!! Deaf streaming professionals like me appreciate it!!

I burst out laughing in a sad bitter way when you announced india 2020. An innocent time…
You’re welcome, and yeah, so sad. I’ll get to India again soon. Next year I think.
So talking with Blackmagic support I've found this to be a bit disturbing.
Whenever the media is removed from the ATEM Mini xxx the drive is still mounted.
Meaning the data could possibly become corrupt or even damage the drive. I haven't
used the unit long enough to determine that this could be a problem but I'm sure it would be.
I've only been in the computer business for 30 years but I do see this as a problem.
The system is designed such that you can remove the hard drive WHILE RECORDING and it will still close the file. It’s impressive. And it works. There is no unmount procedure.
does this switcher support 1280x720 resolution ?
Good video!
thanks!
Our pastor has a PTZ Optics camera going into a controller for fast switching. Can the controller be ran through the ATM to control the PTZ optics? We then was to buy a second camera to capture the words on our screen and add them into the main feed from the PTZ camera. The background is blue. Will the ATM be able to key out the blue? Or would we just have to use PIP? For live stream to FB we take a feed direct from the camera into an Elgato Cam Link can we feed the output from the ATM into the Elgato for live streaming to FB?
I'm not familiar with the PTZ Optics so don't know what it can or can't do via the ATEM. That's a question for them. Yes you can key the blue; the chroma keyer can key any color you like. And you don't need to use a camlink to stream; the ATEM has built-in streaming which you can send to Facebook.
Awesome video. Have one question.
You use atmos inferno to record cause atem mini doesn't allow recording during live feed?
Does atem mini pro record during live feed so no need for atmos inferno?
thanks for watching. This video was on the ORIGINAL ATEM Mini, which did not have the ability to record. ATEM Mini Pro and up all have the ability to record, and if you have an ISO model, it can record all inputs as unique isolated files ("ISO") independently. The only advantage of using an ATOMOS or any other recorder would be to get a higher quality recording. The format recorded to an attached USB drive will be a compressed MP4 format, whereas what comes out of the HDMI is uncompressed, and can than be recorded to ProRes, a very high quality codec, on the ATOMOS.
If this has been answered or doesn't make sense I aplogize, I'm new to the game here and am a neanderthal when it comes to all this. Could you tell me how I can record my Podcast and have the finished product in MP4 or MOV files?
@@stevepuchalski9434 you’re asking for a complete education. I’ve made tons of videos on the ATEM, all here on my channel. Watch some of those, then if you still have specific questions, consider working with me directly at PhotoJoseph.com/1to1
@@photojoseph OK, thank you for bearing with me. As I mentioned my knowledge is rudimentary here. So let's say I had the ATEM mini, cameras, microphones, etc. all ready to go. What actual steps, buttons, apps, would I have to click on or open to start recording video and to what source? Is it a plugged in hard drive, through the computer itself, or what. If you could walk me through at that juncture it would be very much appreciated. I again apologize if i'm not asking my question clearly.
@@stevepuchalski9434 most USB hard drives will work.
@@photojoseph Record on what? And thank you so much!!
Just press record while a USB drive is connected
Hi! I'm about to start a video podcast. It will be 2 people, 3 cameras. We are considering adding a 3 guest from time to time. What switcher do you recommend? The Atem Mini or the Atem mino Pro? We don't want to live stream, just record the podcast. Thanks for the help! Btw, amazing video!
I’d get the ISO, so that when you record all three camera angles, it’s easy to change what you recorded in editing.
This product is not for me who wants to IRL stream on the move but I’m liking your videos because they are informing me on hardware options I had not previously known about in a very thorough manner.

Options for IRL on the move in bad network conditions are limited and expensive.
Will research webcaster x2 now, see if it does bonding 👍
@@photojoseph my man! Ty. Already been there 😂👍
Correct. Here’s where you should go: https://youtu.be/yMEGC4eJ7SM
So I think the webcaster just converts hdmi to rtmp right? And needs a lan (cannot use isp directly).
Can you have two audio input at the same time for stereo?
Yes, or you can use a stereo mic
Do I still need capture cards to use 2 canon cameras with the BM Mini ATEM?
@@photojoseph I'll take a look, thanks.
@@thehoss you should consider joining the channel as well. FYI if you join the channel as a member you will have access to a private Discord server which could be a good place to ask questions, and of course you’ll be helping support the channel! Details at https://YouTube.com/PhotoJoseph/join
@@photojoseph thank you, this is hands down the best video and I will be coming back to your videos when my black magic ATEM mini arrives
Nope
Thats great Joseph,
How would this work if I am streaming through Streamyard?
Over USB as a webcam
This product does not work well. I keep on have issues with my cameras, then I got that to work then had issues with my output screen. Been trying to get this working for the past 3 days. There got to be an easier way to set up this ATEM Mini. It's aways giving me issues. I wish it would work just like you show on your video. My reality is not that simple. I guest you have better equipment than me to make it work.
Sorry to hear that. These work remarkably well, actually. Could be any number of problems. If you join the channel YouTube.com/photojsoeph/join you'll have access to a members-only Discord channel. It's small now but we can try to help you there. Or if you have the budget, you can contract me directly to help PhotoJoseph.com/1to1
I just purchased one of these today (December 2021) & will always come to Photo-Joseph to learn. Thank You for such a great review 👍🏻
Thank you, iSpike! FYI there’s a new resource for participating… become a member at youtube.com/PhotoJoseph/join and gain access to a private Discord server!
Is there any way at all to record the video on the mini? Or only the mini pro? I thought I saw a video once showing how to use an ethernet connection and switcher to a hard drive? Possible?
You can record the HDMI out using any HDMI recorder, or route the HDMI into an HDMI to USB device and capture in a computer, but you can’t record in the ATEM Mini itself. That’s “Pro” and up.
Hello, can u help me, why my atem software don’t show in output live streaming?
Network probably isn’t configure right. No one can help you with simply “it doesn’t work”. You need to explain what you’ve done and what is happening.
your comment on audio delay is brilliant. thanks for reminding folks
For sure. And the cool thing is that since this video, they added programmable audio delay!
what can i use to record the feed to on my MacBook, I am trying to record from my xbox and camera imputed in to the atem then from the atem to my MacBook but how can it record the output on my mac? thanks
OBS would be the easiest… connect the ATEM over USB into the Mac, and then set that as an input in OBS.
best tut ever
🙏🏻
Thanks for the excellent review! I love that you mentioned the delay in audio/video with HDMI. Man, I don't even have to read the instruction manual now. ;-)
Haha glad you enjoyed!
Iwant to know how to stream live to cloud
what cloud
Is there a way to change the video output resolution for the monitor? I am getting scrolling lines on my output monitor.
The HDMI output resolution and frequency matched the Program settings; eg 1080p29.97
He probably didn't get to do that 2020 photography tour of India...
No he didn’t… nor in 2021… but 2022 is looking good!
Did you wind up going to India in 2020 or no?
Nope. Nor 2021. Fingers crossed for 2022.
Does this device require capture cards?
@@photojoseph thank you!
nope!
Nice tutorial for the ATEM mini. We're getting one in about a week for use on our Church's live stream.
Are you using vmix for the stream with Atem mini?
is there a auto switch on it i cant keep pushing the buttons while rec a stream my self please let me know thanks
This is beautiful, detailed and educative
You did a great job! I am going to buy one to keep in my gak bag. You answered my question about mixing sources and frame rates, so that convinced me. THANK YOU!
I have a problem, the atem record the whole screen of my cameras, so in the record file appears the level of battery, the level of the ISO, etc
Turn those settings off on your camera so you have a clean feed or some cameras have settings to give a clean feed out on HDMI.
wow you are great at what you do. have a sub
Hello! Thanks for the presentation. I use Sony cameras (a7riii), and would like to live stream on Youtube with them, with the help of ATEM mini. But, I have some issues with respect to the image that appears on Youtube; it is darker of what the LCD screen of the camera presents, and also it is mirrored. I was wondering if I am missing any steps of the setting up of the ATEM mini, or maybe is something else. Any help is welcomed. Thanks!
Can you use four GoPro Hero 3+ Blacks?
VERY helpful! Thanks for this!!

Hi Joe,

Question from Ireland, I seen a previous reader ask this question but no reply.  I am looking same guidance have you and tips?  I post the previous question below

Hey Joseph, a great presentation on Balckmagic ATEM. Can we use this to livestream a live show by removing delays in which performers are in different physical locations? This means the each singer and instrument players are performing from different physical locations through zoom and the host of the zoom meeting wants to broadcast the show in a live stream in facebook, youtube etc by removing delays.

Thanks

P

I just responded to him. Here's my answer:

You can't remove delay — that would require a time machine ;-) But you can ADD delay to the “faster” cameras. That said, when it comes to music performance, I've heard of systems to do exactly that specifically for the music world. I'm sorry I don't have anything to recommend specifically though… I just know that systems do exist. Try searching for terms like “realtime remote music performance” and see what you come up with. Good luck!
