Ongoing Preset Installation Issue

Hi folks, I’m back!

I’m digging into the presets installation issue right now. I thought it was addressed in the Aperture 3.3.1 update, but now I’m seeing that it either wasn’t entirely addressed, or isn’t addressed for everyone. I’m currently running a series of tests to try to get more info about it.

In the meantime if you’ve figured out anything good or bad regarding this topic (other than “it still does’t work”), please share your experience in the comments below.

thanks

Update on July 23, 2012 - 11:57pm by Joseph @ApertureExpert

Early reports of this being fixed were unfortunately incorrect; the reports apparently were simply that the presets no longer reported errors on install, but sadly they are still not being imported properly.

If you care to verify that this is in fact an Aperture 3.3 and 3.3.1 issue, and not a Preset Pack issue, you can easily test this yourself. All you have to do is create a preset effect using a painted mask (just add Curves for example and paint that in or out then save it as a preset), export the preset, then import it into a different library (important step), and your mask will be gone.

The good news is, I have a solution. The bad news is, the solution sucks. But it’s the only thing I’ve got. I’m desperately hoping for an update to Aperture in the extremely near future that will address this, but in the event something doesn’t appear, shall we say, by tomorrow (Tuesday), I will post my “solution”.

In the meantime, as before, if anyone who purchased since 3.3 was released would like a refund, just forward me your download email with the request and I’ll process it immediately.

If you have the retail (DVD) version, install it, then the 3.2.4 update, THEN install the presets. Once they’re installed, update to 3.3.1.

All of them except #5 are loading fine for me. Based on a forum post I replied to just before looking here (doh!) it appears that is the same issue affecting some others. #5 is acting funky.

Yeah it’s still broke. Doesn’t throw errors when you install but if you apply any of the effects the masks for the curves are set to all-black (as in, applied nowhere) rather than to the zillion-megapixel masks I’m assuming was in the preset. Weird thing is, the preset .plist file still grows appropriately when you install a preset pack so that data is going… somewhere, but it’s being ignored in Aperture.

Hi Joseph:

Great Site! Just purchased all the Presets and successfully installed all but PresetPack #5. Received the error “could not import because of errors in the file”.

I’m running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) & Aperture (3.3.1).

Again, great site, I’ve learned a lot already.

Let me know when the fix is available because I really want to use the Pack #5 presets, their very cool.

Hi Joseph:

Just another followup question regarding the PresetPacks. While the two Texture PresetPacks 3 & 4 loaded, seemingly properly, they appear to have no onscreen effect when applied to a photo?????

Please let me know when you have a fix for these issues?

Jim

All, thanks for your comments. As you can see from the updated post below, I’ve verified that this is an Aperture issue and there’s not a thing I can do to fix the installation problem. I will post a workaround tomorrow if an update to Aperture isn’t released by then.

HI Joseph:

It Works!!!

Apple released a huge update to Aperture today, > 1GB (at least it was for me), so I’m now on 3.3.2.

Imported PresetPacks # 3, 4 & 5 with no problem. Used them on a few photos to test and it all appears to work as one would expect!!!

Thanks for all of your review work on the back end of things. Just really glad its working now cause I’ve got photo’s to work on!!! lol

Thanks again,

Jim
