OS X 10.10.3 beta and Photos.app for OS X beta is now free to download
If you just can't wait to get your hands on Photos, now's your chance. Apple has opened OS X 10.10.3 to a free public beta.
Just be sure you don't install this on your primary system. It's a beta operating system after all; you have no idea what other apps you rely on every day will or will not work here. That's why I've tagged this photo “Advanced”—beta isn't for everyone!
Head over to appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram to sign up and start downloading. Enjoy!

Is the download just for the photos app … or is the install for the full OS X 10.1.3 beta? ***
If the latter, I’ll have to pass until I set up my test platform … too busy right now. I’m not going to mess with it on an active workstation … too many irons in the fire right now.
*** Yep … just read it through … it’s not just a Photos app for OS X beta … it’s the whole enchilada … OS X 10.10.3 public beta … will have to continue living vicariously through others for at least a bit longer.

You can install the OS on an old spare drive in a dock and it will run at a decent speed. But while stuff could still happen, the latest beta is probably pretty close to shipping.

I know … that is what I usually do … it’s just right now, I have too much going on … even with a spare drive set up and ready to go … I wouldn’t have time to play with it … it’s going to have to wait a week or two …

Created a new library, right clicked on it in Finder, Show Package Contents and inside I see there is a folder called Plugins. Nothing in it at the moment but would seem to indicate future planning for that (maybe even surprise announcement at official release). Did the earlier developer version have this?
Also does anyone who has migrated an Aperture library over which contained plugins notice if any plugin content is also copied over to this folder, even if it doesn’t actually work for now? (doubt it but curious)

I notice there’s a mask folder there. I wonder what that’s for? is it possible adjustment brushes will be put back? I wonder if it’s possible for other types of mask to be added? Would be if something like parametric mask can be added so we can do luminosity masks, A-channel masks, b-channel masks, hue masks, saturation masks, r-channel masks or b-channel masks, etc. This plugin folder looks really interesting, but I don’t want to speculate. We don’t really know. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, another potentially interesting one. It is also blank in my standard iPhone Photos based library but again I wonder what it looks like to those who have migrated their Aperture library or a test version (getting tempted).
So went ahead and created a test Aperture library, used Photomatix as a plugin and also brushed in some curves and enhance (contrast) adjustments. Imported test library to Photos then checked package contents but those folders remain blank.

An aperture test library imported into photos in the end looks very much the same as the original aperture database folder. A generic Photos library without an Aperture library import is less exciting but still has files ending .apdb so I guess some of the database code from Aperture is being used in Photos (not sure if it is MySQL or their own special variant but both function along those lines).

There’s a plugin folder in the Aperture content package too. What happens if you copy the the content of Aperture’s plugin folder into the Photos’ plugin folder?

Couldn’t easily locate the plugin folder in Aperture library - was it not separately stored in Library>Application support?
Can confirm the masks existing in the Aperture Library test.migratedaplibrary but not in the Photos version. So while the adjustments have translated over in the import, the mask records do not seem to have come across implying that this is not here at a later date for Photos to access, unless it’s buried somewhere else.
Did some digging, hurrah! The masks have transferred over but they are now in a sub-folder (modelresources) within the Resources folder. That is reassuring to know that that information is not lost and could be accessible and modifiable in the future.
My test library was just with four images so easy to compare and contrast the two.

The Aperture plugin folder is in the Aperture application. do a show content package to see it. it’s in the Content folder. The apdb file is an SQLite file for Aperture.

Yes, see that now but non-integrated third party plugins such as Photomatix, Alien Skin Exposure, BorderFX are all installed in Library>Application support>Aperture. Had a play with copying Photomatix plugin over but no joy in anything more happening in the app. Not a surprise really, it has its own install process. The Apple approved ones inside Aperture I copied over to both the plugins folder in the photos library and also created a plugins folder within Photos.app package contents but neither had any effect. In all cases checked in Add part of adjustments and in Preferences.
