This week I was showing off the brand new DxO PhotoLab 4 DeepPRIME feature, which is an amazing new noise reduction algorithm. I actually brought in viewer-submitted high ISO photos to treat! Be sure to check if your camera is supported. After downloading the trial version, I was saddened to find out my cameras were not supported. The cameras are multiple months old, so I was very surprised DXO does not yet support them. BTW, Topaz DeNoiseAi supports their raw files. Just be sure your camera is supported before spending your hard earned money.
I actually shot a really tricky destination wedding last year where we ended up indoors in a tight and dark space due to weather. I could not use flash and had to push the images much more than normal and I wasn't happy with most of them. The bride is a friend so I went back and re-edited a bunch of the photos pushing some even more and using DeepPRIME. I was amazed at the difference. The photos were originally processed with Prime noise reduction in DXO Optics Pro 10 Elite. In April of this year I got a new camera and upgraded to DXO PL3 but didn't note a difference in NR performance. PL4 is a huge leap and after playing with the trial for a while, ended up happily paying the upgrade fee for the new version. I'm primarily an M43 shooter but I also have an a6000 and 550D from a while back and while I don't use the 550D much any more, DeepPRIME gave new life to my a6000 and GX1.

Deep prime need a good processing computer,, and graphic,,card..up to date.. if you have a old computer too old.. the exportation must be too long.. and some bug and freezing image processing with win 10...so i ask a remboursement andstay a while with Dx 3 elite again..A_+
Deep Prime seems to work very well indeed, I've tried it on a couple of my noisy photos and all came out much better than Prime alone. Not only does it find detail in the noise of the subject, but it produces much less crunchy artifacts in the blurred but still noisy background. It also runs faster at least for me - 10s to export ~12MP cropped image with DeepPrime, vs 19s for the same image with Prime.

Great overview! I watched this and the live version. What button are you hitting when you see the original without noise reduction applied? It looks like a quick toggle but I am not noticing the mouse moving or any sliders moving. You have sold me to upgrade from version 3 to 4 which I thought I was not going to do.
@@photojoseph Correct. Using the tiny preview window under "Denoising Technology". Tried left mouse hold, right mouse hold, both hold, and a mix of ctrl, alt, shift the mouse holds. Checked shortcuts but nothing jumping out to me as of yet. I am sure I am missing something.
hm, no I'm quite sure it's everywhere. You're clicking and holding on the tiny preview window, right?
@@photojoseph I wonder if it is an MAC version feature. It is not happening for me on windows. Will keep playing with it to see if it is just me.

Great review. So DeepPrime has no controls at all?
Actually there’s a Luminance slider (“reduces fine grain”) and a Dead Pixels slider (“reduces dead and hot pixels”).
This is going to sound stupid but I need to ask ... if I have old negatives which I then copy using a macro lens into a 2020 camera as RAW files can I then use DeepPRIME to denoise them? The camera/lens combo will be recognised by DXO even though the images were taken on an analog camera 30 years ago. I ask because I’m just about to start digitising several thousands of old analog negatives.

No, that won't work. The algorithm is built on knowledge of noise patterns of specific cameras at specific ISOs. You'd be telling PhotoLab that the photo was shot by the camera you shot the negative with, not the camera you shot the film with. You would need to use a generic denoise tool, not one that's based on the camera profile. And I think that answer your second question, too.

Excellent overview. Though I wonder what scenarios someone would choose PRIME over DeepPRIME. Does DeepPRIME add a significant time/processing penalty versus PRIME? Or perhaps there's some edge case scenarios where PRIME produces better image quality than DeepPRIME.

@@photojoseph Thanks for the input, just did some testing with a 36MP 102k ISO file on my 3 year old low end laptop.

44seconds with PRIME.
53seconds with DeepPrime.
So it seems DeepPRIME comes with about a ~20% processing penalty over PRIME. But holy smokes the increase in image quality in the case of my test photo was beyond measure. Just incredible!

I think it’s only still there because it’s faster. I don’t see a difference but my Mac is kinda insane. If your noise reduction needs are met by PRIME, and if DeepPRIME takes longer and you have a ton of images to process… that’s a guess. It never came up in the press meetings!
Hey Joseph, nice video, never heard of Photolab. How does this compare to Luminar?
sorry, I forgot to mention that I shoot full frame with 62 Mpixel resolution (Sony A7RIV) so I need a fast PC. I would love to compare it to a 20.000 € MacPro
since a few months, I use both. First DXO. Yes, it is more professional, more stable, better programming. Version 4.0 uses both the CPU and the GPU simultaneously. And the RAM, a weak point of Luminar without crashing. I shoot in RAW, work with DXO, export in TIFF, then I get fantastic pictures, 100% guarantee, no frustration. Only then I open the photos in Luminar in order to add additional effects, which may be fantastic or . But when Luminar crashes and fails, I still have a very good photo.
But when it works as it should, then Luminar is great. But it will always stay combined, at least for now.
DXO 4.0 is a major improvement with deepdenoise. Using a good graphics card is great, and while exporting lots of photos, I still have about 50% of the CPU resources available. This is a lot with my old i9-7900 (10 cores, 20 threads), and it costs about ten times less as the MacPro of Joseph.
Especially considering that I recently upgraded my RAM from 32 to 64 GB (rather cheap for the moment for a PC; impossible to afford for a MacPro for me; my limit is 2000 € for my PC, and a few hundred € for self-upgrading from time to time)
No idea how stable Luminar would be on the MacPro. A comparison of DXO deepdenoise with Topaz denoise would be interesting. No idea what Adobe is doing for the moment. But certainly too expensive, too slow, too complex and not so well advanced in AI (for the moment)

I’d say this is more traditional, more technical, more professional. Luminar had some amazing features but in my experience many don’t quite meet the granular precision I want. Their sky replacement though is pretty insane.
