Choosing Which ATEM Macro is Triggered by the ATEM Mini Extreme Macro Buttons

Photo Moment - May 22, 2021

The ATEM Mini Extreme and ATEM Mini Extreme ISO have six macro buttons!! Amazing!! But… what if you have more than six macros? How do you choose which ones get triggered by those buttons?

Need an ATEM Mini?

What this tip is about…

Both the ATEM Mini Extreme and ATEM Mini Extreme ISO have six hardware macro buttons on them, which is fantastic! Finally, you can trigger a macro from a physical button on your ATEM. But which ones do they trigger?

Well that part is easy… they trigger the first six macros in your collection. But what if you want to move a macro from, say, position seven into position one so that you can trigger it from the hardware? To do that, you need to edit the XML file.

It's not that scary, I promise. In this video, I'll show you how. Time to roll up your sleeves, download BBEdit (or just use any text editor, but BBEdit makes it easier), and pretend you know how to code!!

Did you know know this is how you have to move the buttons around? I hope this tip is helpful, and if you want to see more, be sure to subscribe! https://youtube.com/c/photojoseph?sub_confirmation=1
Nice Video! Thanks! There's a way to run MACROS one after the other with one click? 1,2,3,4,5,6, and going on, 7, 8, 9... every click next macro? Thank you!
Yes — make all your macros, then start recording a new macro, and trigger each macro you want to trigger. It’ll basically just copy the code into the new one.
Great Tip. You're also the first video I've found that specifically the first 6 slots apply to the 6 buttons. I've had a tough time getting this to work accurately and now at least I know I'm not crazy. Thanks
@JeffKuhn here’s the thing about macros. I always say this when I’m teaching how to make macros, but this video wasn’t about how to make macros so I don’t think I mentioned it. This is going to sound very obvious, but think about it. A macro will only do what you tell it to do. Nothing more, nothing less. So if you don’t tell it to turn off that lower third that you might have turned on some other point in your show, then it doesn’t know to turn that off. This is simultaneously very powerful and very confusing.
@@photojoseph No, they tell you how to make it, say if you have the extreme you have buttons... and nothing on how to assign to the buttons. Side note... these macros definitely get tricky based on what is "on" before you build it. I made macro 1, worked great coming out of startup save settings. Built macro 3, also great from startup save. AND pressing macro 3 after pressing macro 1 wreaked havoc on my display and had a real tough time even figuring out how to get it to play normal without unplugging it. haha. Re-recorded each to make sure all background that could be on was deselected before starting into the macro based on either main presentation mode I might use.... though I guess in hindsight, that could be another macro... go back to startup, then press the next macro. or maybe a combo macro that combines a startup reset with the original macro 1. Figuring that out as I type this... oof. I've got some playing around to do. ;-)
Oh really! That’s funny; I would’ve thought everybody would say that. Glad it was able to help you!
you remind me of Fry
Fry?
Can you make a video on restoring xml with the stream deck if it is possible
@wiideathmodtv it could! I’ll add it to the list but it won’t be soon
@photojoseph  have not tried but will try would this make a good video subject though? Sorry for so many questions!
Oh I see. You want the a streamDeck button to load a different XML profile into the ATEM. Hmm, I wonder if you can do that with a macro, then trigger the macro with the streamDeck. Have you looked at bitfocus companion? It might do it too.
@@photojosephexample I have a setings for youtube channel a and b how would I be able to switch between the two settings with the stream deck
Restoring? I’m not sure what you mean.
I have just started to use the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO. I have added macros to control our various camera angles, especially using the Super Source. While the buttons work great, they do not light up at all when you're using them. Is there any way to have the buttons illuminate when they are used?
@Polar-Star oh that’s interesting. I don’t have an extreme at the moment to test on, sorry. Make sure you’re on the latest software, build a macro that has pauses, and if you still don’t see it, follow up with their support again.
@@photojoseph According to my colleague who sent a request on this, Black Magic Design Technical Support sent back this reply, "As for the Macro Buttons, the they will only illuminate when running the macro, so if it is just a quick switch it will not illuminate for very long, if you add pauses between the selections, the button will illuminate for the duration of the macro." I've tried this but I haven't been successful.
No, because they aren’t “on”. All it’s doing is sending a command, like volume up or down.
Are there hotkeys for triggering the macros ?
(disclaimer : I have googled it before posting this question. All I could find is how to do that in Word, Excel etc. - nothing about the ATEM software)
There are not. Look into bitfocus.io Companion for alternative ways to trigger shortcuts and macros
Hey got your tips in email but the ATEM classes pushed me to pay. Thank
That’s wonderful to hear, thank you. See you in the Discord!
Is it possible to change the size of the PIP windows on the default PiP buttons?
@@photojoseph thank you.
Unfortunately no
Very good tip!!
I have made 2 macros that can both be triggered by a StreamDeck. I need one to continuously loop, and I need the other to play once only. Is there a way to set this in macro itself (turn and turn off the loop)? I have to manually go in and turn the loop on and off, which really defeats the purchase of the streamdeck. Any thoughts?
Yes tried to create a macro turning loop on and off, but it does not record the action.
I’m using Companion
Hmm, have you tried recording a macro of toggling loop? And are you using Companion as well? If not, how are you triggering the Macros on the Stream Deck?
Have you seen any way of selected which angles to iso record. I’m often in scenarios where I have 4 inputs but only wish to record one and master to save on disk space and processing usage.
No, it always records all angles. It has to do with the generated Resolve file. Without the angles recorded it’d have nothing to connect to. However the empty angles are recorded as black and take very very little disk space.
Is it possible to run macros on ATEM extreme without a PC? I mean after they've been created previously via the software. Just don't want to be dependent on a PC during a show.
This does work. I don't need to reopen the software to run a small macro after it's been programmed.
@@photojoseph Thanks for your Reply Joseph!
Wow that’s a really good question. I can’t test it now, but I’m going to guess NO. I seriously doubt that those first six macros are stored in the ATEM’s memory. Would be very cool if they were though.
Thanks for this video.
But in using Atem Mini Pro, is there a possible way to have a monitor for both Multiview and as well for program so as to monitor the videos coming in as well as what we are sending out since the device has only one hdmi output? Also, if the output is set to Multiview in a live broadcasting, how do you ensure that Multiview is not what is going out for the people (audience) to see?
USB can't be converted to HDMI. You need the Extreme model, with dual HDMI ports.
@@photojoseph I mean a situation whereby you have monitors to feed the audience and the hdmi output is connected to the monitor at the workstation which is on Multiview, how do you send only the Program to the monitor that feeds the congregation or can the USB be converted to hdmi?
Multiview includes the program (top right quarter of the view), so that’s how you know what is in Program. Multiview can ONLY be played over the HDMI output, so the live encoder and USB output can only ever show the Program.
May i ask PLEASE how does this work on a PC with notepad because your using a MAC
Try Notepad++. It is an editor for writing sourcecode for programs, software. It has the color coding and folding.
Any plain text editor will do. If you can find one that formats code like BBEdit, then it'll be easier to follow. Check this out https://winningwp.com/free-and-premium-text-editing-software-programs-for-macs-and-windows/
We got our new ATEM Mini Extreme for our Ethiopian FM radio Live show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn9Gu__-Kuw

Thanks man, this is pretty helpful. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Now I need to upgrade my Atem Mini Pro to Extreme only 😛
But thanks for sharing workarounds like this.
I wish it was easier to do, but this is the way!
Thank you sir. This is most useful.
Awesome!
